BEEKEEPING COURSES

The BASIC EXAMINATION is a test of the things a beginner is expected to know. It can be taken either in the candidate's own apiary or at the Association Apiary at Brackenhurst College. Although it can be taken at any time it is recommended that this examination is taken at the start of the season when there are fewer bees in the hive.

Once the BASIC Examination has been passed beekeepers can then progress to the more formal written/practical examinations.  Assessment takes the form of a series of modular examinations on all aspects of beekeeping. The examinations take place in March each year. Each candidate studies on their own although there is an excellent correspondence course organised by the BBKA. Application to take the examination is through the Education Officer of the Nottinghamshire Beekeepers' Association.

Modules currently available are:

  1. Honeybee Management
  2. Honeybee Products and Forage
  3. Honeybee Diseases, Pests and Poisoning
  4. Intermediate Honeybee Biology
  5. Honeybee Biology
  6. Honeybee Behaviour
  7. Selection and Breeding of Honeybees
  8. Honeybee Management and History
  9. Microscopy
